The South East London Cancer Alliance has partnered with the UK health charity The Eve Appeal to launch the You Need to Know campaign, to raise awareness of the symptoms of womb cancer and encourage people to speak to their GP if they have symptoms of concern.
In the UK, over 9,000 people are diagnosed with womb cancer each year and cases are rising. The risk of womb cancer increases with age, and the main symptom is bleeding after the menopause.
The aim of the campaign is to help women living in south east London recognise the symptoms and get checked by a doctor. The earlier the condition is diagnosed, the more successful the treatment is likely to be. Activities will include a targeted campaign across social media and public education workshops, led by The Eve Appeal, with local community groups across south east London.
Our colleagues in north east London developed this campaign based on 2018 data, which demonstrated that Black and Asian women in north east London were proportionally more likely to be diagnosed with womb cancer at stage 4 (late) rather than at stage 1 (early).
In south east London, our communities also experience a higher proportion of late stage diagnosis when compared to other parts of England. This is why we’ve launched the ‘You Need to Know’ campaign to help women recognise the symptoms of womb cancer early and get checked.
