What to expect in your first few weeks

This page gives advice to help you settle in to your new role.

Your first few weeks will mostly be spent getting used to the organisation and the duties you will be undertaking. However, expect that you will be required to undertake the following which are part of the organisation’s obligations to you as a new employee:

Induction

Most employers provide an induction which may be a few hours or spread over a few days/weeks.  The induction will introduce you to the organisation, some of its staff and will also cover the basic elements of things you need to know before you start working with service users/clients.

You will also be provided with something like a name badge or ID card and will probably be show how to access your buildings.

You may also be provided with a uniform,  or you may be able to wear your own clothes, dependent upon the role you are undertaking and who you are working for.

You may also be introduced to any technology you will be using, provided with passwords and log on details, including an email address for your use whilst at work.  It is important you follow the instructions you are given with regard to password protection and security.

Mandatory and Statutory training

Most organisations have a list of training which they are required to provide.  Some will be statutory such as fire safety, others may be about policies and procedures. Some may be on line others may be face to face or practical workshops (such as first aid or basic life support.

Meeting with your supervisor/manager and team

You may meet your manager/supervisor on your first day, but you will also have 1-1 meetings with them throughout your employment. You will also meet team members and may be asked to attend team meetings. Don’t worry about trying to remember everyone’s name but if you are unsure about how to address some
please ask.

Supervision will also be provided. For more information on this see Domain 3 of the framework.

Tips
