Preparing for your first day

This page will help you start your new job in the best possible way.

Starting Work –
the day has arrived to start your new role.

You will probably have an induction and a “tour” of the new work place; you may be given lots of information to read and you will be provided with a “mentor” or Supervisor to help you settle in.

Tips

  • Plan your route to work and look at public transport availability
  • Make sure you have refreshments with you such as water and a snack until you find out where other facilities are
  • Remember any important documents you may need to take with you on your first day – and you may have your photograph taken for your ID badge!
  • If you have to drive your car, make sure you have the right insurance for work.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected, because plans change in the working environment.
  • Attend for work with a positive, open mind and ask questions – don’t be afraid that in the early days you may ask lots of questions because you want to understand the role you
are undertaking and the organisation you are working for.
  • Think about how you are going to get to know people, what information do you want to share about you and your experiences and how you may want to socialise – particularly if you are working from home, or undertaking hybrid working arrangements (a mixture of working in the workplace and at home)
  • What support do you need if you are working from home to stay connected and engaged.
