South East London Integrated Care System releases Green Plan for meeting Net Zero by 2030
South East London Integrated Care System (ICS) has released its Green Plan. The Green Plan is a three year strategic document that will guide the ICS’s efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and promote sustainable healthcare.

The NHS is a major consumer of resources in pursuit of delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centred healthcare. Recognising that the climate emergency is a health emergency, NHS England declared the ambitious goal of achieving net zero by 2045, with an 80% reduction by 2028–2032.
South East London ICS understands the critical need for sustainability, which is why the system has aligned with NHS England’s net-zero targets to ensure a healthier planet for healthier people:
- Reach net zero by 2040 for our NHS Carbon Footprint (the emissions we control directly)
- Reach net zero for our NHS Carbon Footprint Plus (the emissions we influence) by 2045.
The South East London ICS Green Plan 2022-2025 serves as an overarching system-wide sustainability strategy that encompasses and aligns with the Green Plans of the five NHS Trusts and the ICS’s Primary Care Green Plan. The plan covers 11 areas of focus with the goal of reducing ICS greenhouse gas emissions while improving care quality and adding social value wherever possible: Workforce and System Leadership, Air Quality, Travel and Transport, Estates and Facilities, Sustainable Models of Care, Digital Transformation, Medicines, Supply Chain and Procurement, Food and Nutrition, Adaptation, and Green/Blue Spaces and Biodiversity.
