These skills are designed to assist with career, role and personal development. These should be considered once you are confident in the relevant skills above.
As part of your employment you will participate in an annual appraisal or personal development review. It is an ongoing process of reviewing, planning and evaluation of how you are managing the duties and responsibilities of your post and how you can improve/develop further.
At the end of each review you should either produce or adapt an existing Personal Development Plan (PDP) which identifies your learning and development needs and interests – the plan is jointly agreed between you and the person undertaking the review. The plan may be to support you in your existing role or to undertake additional training and skills to enable you to progress in your career.
As part of preparing for your personal review you can also use the time to reflect on your past experiences, what you have learnt and the tools or techniques you have used to assist you. Practitioners will often ask for supporting statements to reinforce their learning and development of skills as part of their evidence.
Why is this importantReceiving feedback on your performance is a key element of helping to motivate and retain staff in the workplace. Recording how you have performed in your role, the challenges you have met and overcome, the training you have undertaken and implemented into your practice demonstrate how you have developed in your role.
Undertaking a personal development review also brings together the other elements of this section in the framework of self awareness, resilience, reflection, supervision, communications and team working.
Career planning is also a key element for a workforce which is often required to react quickly to unforeseen situations and ensuring staff are able and prepared to extend their knowledge and scope of learning is essential.
