Powering our partnership: the NHS commits to voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations in south east London

28 Aug 2024

There are over 6,000 voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations across south east London. They are dedicated to delivering essential services, supporting underserved communities, and fostering a more inclusive, connected, and happy society.

But despite their critical role, the VCSE sector has historically been underrepresented in strategic healthcare planning and supported to respond to local needs.  NHS South East London is working with these groups to change that.

As a demonstration of that commitment, we are thrilled to announce the new South East London Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise (SEL VCSE) Charter. This Charter will strengthen the vital partnership between VCSE organisations and the NHS in south east London.

The Charter, co-developed by NHS South East London and the VCSE Strategic Alliance, is our commitment to collaborative working between us. It will ensure that the unique insights and expertise of the VCSE sector are recognised and take into account in plans to support the health and care of residents in south east London.

Our key commitments include:

  • Developing a strategic partnership: Including the VCSE sector as a partner in strategic direction and system planning, ensuring an equitable voice and influence for smaller organisations.
  • Providing fair and sustainable funding, reducing bureaucracy, and promoting innovation: Increasing funding to the VCSE sector to support services that deliver greater social value in health creation and prevention.
  • Building capacity and sustainability: Strengthening the capacity of VCSE organisations to continue delivering essential services effectively.
  • Innovative and integrated solutions: Leveraging the strengths of the VCSE sector to address complex health and care challenges in new and effective ways.

The Power of Partnership

The Charter is more than just a document; it is a testament to the power of partnership. By bringing together leaders from across the VCSE sector and NHS South East London, we are creating a unified front to tackle some of the most pressing health and care challenges in south east London, ultimately improving the outcomes for our communities.

Andrew Bland, Chief Executive Officer, NHS South East London, said:

“The signing of the SEL VCSE Strategic Alliance Charter marks a significant milestone in our commitment to working collaboratively to improve healthcare for south east Londoners.

“By partnering with the VCSE sector, we are not only amplifying their vital contributions but also fostering innovation and inclusivity within our health system. This Charter is a roadmap for a healthier, more equitable south east London.”

Sir Richard Douglas, Chair, NHS South East London, said:

“The SEL VCSE Strategic Alliance Charter is a landmark moment in our journey towards a more integrated and inclusive healthcare system. By forging strong partnerships with the VCSE sector, we are enhancing our ability to address health inequalities and improve outcomes for all communities in south east London. This Charter represents our shared commitment to innovation, collaboration, and sustainable health solutions.”
