On Friday 4 April 2025, healthcare professionals, patients and community organisations gathered to learn about a new therapy to support people with Parkinson’s disease. Hosted by Bromley Healthcare’s Adult Speech and Language Therapy (ASLT) team, the session showcased the Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST) programme – funded by Parkinson’s Disease UK’s grant scheme, it’s designed to strengthen swallowing muscles and reduce the risks associated with swallowing difficulties.

The event had over 50 patients and their family members along with speech and language therapists, neuro specialists, the falls prevention team, and representatives from local Parkinson’s groups. Attendees learned how EMST therapy works with a demonstration with the device, and received guidance on how to access the programme. Attendees also received informational leaflets outlining the therapy’s benefits, had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in informal discussions about their experiences and concerns. Representatives from Bromley Well and Bromley’s Parkinson’s UK team were present, offering additional guidance and signposting to relevant resources.

Bindu Vekaria, Interim Head of Rehabilitation and Service Lead, Adult Speech and Language Therapy said “We were fortunate to receive funding for this project, which has allowed us to introduce this therapy to patients in Bromley. It’s an exciting opportunity to offer a structured, evidence-based programme that can make a real difference in people’s lives. Our goal is to make this therapy as accessible as possible, and we encourage all Bromley residents with Parkinson’s disease to reach out and take part.”

A representative from Parkinson’s UK Bromley branch also attended and praised the initiative: “It’s fantastic to see such a proactive approach to improving the lives of people with Parkinson’s. Swallowing difficulties can be a real challenge, and having access to this type of therapy locally is a game-changer for so many people.”

One of the who attended the event said “I have suffered from Parkinson’s Disease for 4-5 years. I had not realised there was such an active local community. Amazing. I have talked to and met more helpful people in the last 60 minutes than the last 4 years. Will be back for more meetings even though my speech and swallowing is ok at the moment.
