Community pharmacies play a key role in transforming NHS health services by integrating with other primary care providers, such as general practice. This supports the ambitions of the Fuller stocktake report and the NHS Long Term Plan.

By using their skilled workforce, community pharmacies can:

  • Deliver patient-centred care.
  • Improve patient outcomes.
  • Reduce health inequalities.
  • Strengthen their role within the wider healthcare system.

Uniquely positioned at the crossroads of many patient-facing disciplines, community pharmacies are essential for creating joined-up care and improving population health. This aligns with the goals of the SEL ICS Joint Forward Plan for Transforming and Integrating Medicines Optimisation.

Local leadership

In south east London, the Integrated Care Board and Pharmacy Alliance have introduced Community Pharmacy Neighbourhood Leads (CPNLs). These leaders:

  • Represent community pharmacies within their localities.
  • Build close ties with Primary Care Networks (PCNs).
  • Improve communication, raise awareness, and support the delivery of pharmacy services in the community.
