Healthwatch are organisations with statutory functions funded by, but independent from, local authorities. In south east London there are six independent Healthwatch which are coterminous with the six boroughs in south east London (Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark).
The six local Healthwatch across south east London are the independent champion for people who use health and social care services. Healthwatch listen to what people like about services and what could improve, and share their views with partner organisations across south east London.
They build their knowledge of health inequalities from people and communities as well as official data sources. They use their influence to make a difference, encouraging action to tackle health inequalities and holding organisations to account. Healthwatch also help people find the information they need about services in their area.
We have funded the system role of Director South East London Healthwatch. Representing the six local Healthwatch, the Director is both a conduit for coordinated insight and intelligence from local communities and an active partner within the Integrated Care System (ICS). The Director south east London Healthwatch is a member of the Integrated Care Partnership Board (ICP), the ICS Quality Surveillance Group, ICB Equality Delivery Group and the ICB Engagement Assurance Committee where she represents the voice of people and communities. The role is hosted by Healthwatch Greenwich.
The Director South East London Healthwatch facilitates the South East London Healthwatch Reference Group. The Reference Group provides added value and furthers the work of local Healthwatch with stakeholders across south east London, champions the diverse voices of people, carers and local communities and helps strengthen collaboration between the Healthwatch organisations in south east London. Its role is to complement rather than to duplicate the challenge and scrutiny functions of local Healthwatch.

Throughout July, more than 150 local people attended a series of webinars, which were an opportunity to discuss with their local NHS, care and voluntary sector colleagues about what most matters to them and their family and friends.
With changes taking place to the health and care system from 1 July, Folake Segun, Director of Healthwatch in South East London explains why local people are key to making change happen, and encourages residents to share their views and experiences of using health and care services.
