Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust has implemented the EMIS hospital medicines management solution to transform how medications are prescribed and managed. This digital innovation is improving safety, efficiency, and patient care while saving valuable staff time.

Previously, the Trust relied on manual processes for medication management, including paper drug charts and email-based communication with hospital pharmacies. These tasks were time-consuming and administratively demanding. The introduction of electronic prescribing and medicines administration (ePMA) has streamlined these processes, significantly reducing workloads and enhancing care delivery.

The new system is saving staff approximately three hours per day across all inpatient wards. This extra time allows nursing staff to focus more on patient care. Additionally, the Trust has cut email traffic to the pharmacy by 4,500 emails annually and eliminated the need for paper drug charts, saving £2,000 each year on printing costs.

This digital transformation demonstrates how innovation can deliver better healthcare outcomes, improve staff well-being, and optimise resources.
