  • Name of service: The Healthy Living Team, GSTT
  • Describe your role in three words: Enjoyable, empowering, challenging

What does your day look like from sunrise to sunset?

I start my day in either the community or office. When starting in the community I usually host hour-long face-to-face or virtual sessions, where I educate patients on exercise and nutrition, with the aim of ensuring my patients feel invigorated and motivated. My work day can be fairly busy, travelling to multiple locations and navigating day-to-day challenges of the role, to add, my service operates in evenings, up to 7.30pm to accommodate patients working full-time.

How does your service support the residents of south east London?

We offer healthy lifestyle programs in Lewisham, Southwark, and Lambeth, helping our clients improve their lifestyle through exercise and nutrition. We also deliver a weight management programme for Caribbean, Black and African heritage clients, addressing the cultural nuances head-on, it is the first of its kind in South East London.

What’s the best way of explaining your role in the team?

My role in the multidisciplinary team is to deliver nutritional and exercise sessions. I lead weight management sessions, empowering people struggling with weight loss, hypertension, diabetes and other conditions by providing useful information. I emphasise that this is a lifelong journey, building confidence and awareness over the 12-week programme.

Tell us about a time when you felt you made a difference to someone

Whilst doing a check-in at the start of a virtual group session a client mentioned she had an itchy throat, it sounded like she was having an allergic reaction and I advised her to go to the hospital, she was initially hesitant, but as the other group members chimed in, she agreed. I’m grateful that I created a supportive environment, encouraging the client to seek medical attention.

What do you love about your role?

I’m a people person who loves all things exercise and nutrition. I love being out and about and helping people to achieve their goals, giving them the motivation to tackle issues many of my clients have been struggling with for years. Additionally, the culture within my team is great, we recognise excellent work (I recently received a Certificate of Achievement) and even held a sport’s day a few weeks ago!

What advice would you give to someone starting in this role or keen to work in a similar service?

My role involves a lot of talking and organising, so you need to be a people person with good organisational and listening skills. You need to have a passion for helping others and healthy living. Although within the team we each have our specialisms we value transparency and all help out where we can.
