Lung Cancer Awareness Day: Targeted lung health checks in south east London

01 Aug 2024

Have you been invited to a free NHS lung health check in south east London?

You may have seen mobile lung screening trucks in supermarket car parks across our boroughs. In south east London, these are run by the South East London Cancer Alliance (SELCA), alongside Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, as part of the national Targeted Lung Health Checks programme.

The Targeted Lung Health Check programme is offered to people in south east London between the ages of 55 to 74 who are current or former smokers and so are at a greater risk of developing lung cancer. Those eligible will receive a letter to invite them for a lung health check.

A lung health check finds out how well your lungs are working and hopes to identify problems early. Most of the time nothing is found, but if we can identify an issue with your breathing or lungs early, treatment could be simpler and more successful.

The screening process is straightforward and begins with a telephone assessment, followed, if necessary, by further tests at a convenient location.

You can find out more about these lung checks in SELCA’s video below.
